POSITION: High School Counselor
LOCATION: Dearborn, Michigan
JOB TYPE: Full-Time
JOB SUMMARY:
We are seeking a dedicated High School Counselor to support the academic, emotional, and social development of students. The counselor will provide guidance, counseling, coordination, consultation, and referral services to students, while promoting parent and community involvement. This role is essential in fostering a positive school culture and supporting students’ overall growth and success.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist students with academic, emotional, social, or behavioral challenges.
Provide guidance and support for student development, including navigating school culture.
Teach conflict resolution, restorative justice skills, and coping strategies.
Consult and collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers, administration, and community agencies.
Conduct individual and group counseling sessions as needed.
Provide accurate, comprehensive, and objective information to parents/guardians.
Maintain confidential student records in accordance with state laws and district policies.
Collaborate with staff to enhance understanding of student needs and their impact on learning.
Support students dealing with family crises, including separation, divorce, bereavement, or other challenges.
Participate in professional learning communities and ongoing professional development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Guidance Counselor (NT) endorsement OR Michigan School Guidance Counselor license with the appropriate endorsement and grade level.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to build rapport with students and families.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and restorative justice skills.
Patience, empathy, and understanding of students’ concerns.
Counseling and/or teaching experience preferred.
Knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy.
RELEVANT COMPETENCIES:
Awareness of students’ physical, social, emotional, and academic development.
Ability to nurture the home-school-community relationship.
Proficiency in core academic areas and school curriculum.
Familiarity with MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) and other learning interventions.
Experience using formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and improve student achievement.
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in professional learning communities.
Capable of providing a flexible, student-centered, and supportive learning environment.
Strong data analysis skills to inform instruction and counseling decisions.
