Job Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Pattern Maker to support the development of master models used in prototype and production manufacturing. This role involves creating high-precision patterns, core boxes, and tooling for injection molding and stamping applications. The ideal candidate will have experience working with wood, fiberglass, composites, and fixture building, along with the ability to interpret engineering drawings and produce high-quality tooling solutions.
This position supports a long-term expansion of the model shop and requires someone who takes pride in craftsmanship, precision, and continuous improvement.
Work Schedule:
- Monday – Friday: 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM
- Saturday: 6:00 AM – 11:00 AM (as needed)
- Overtime up to 55 hours per week
Key Responsibilities:
- Build master patterns, core boxes, and tooling for prototype and production parts
- Interpret complex engineering blueprints and specifications
- Create geometries using traditional methods and VISI CAD/CAM software
- Fabricate fixtures using wood, fiberglass, resins, and composite materials
- Perform composite layups and laminating for master models
- Build vacuum forming tooling and develop venting strategies
- Integrate additive manufacturing (3D printed) components into tooling systems
- Construct high-quality display models for presentations and trade shows
- Operate mill room equipment including saws, drill presses, and sanders
- Develop prototype and low-volume production tooling solutions
- Generate CNC toolpaths (3-axis and 5-axis) using VISI CAM software
- Maintain precision tolerances of ±0.005” or better
- Support continuous improvement and shop organization initiatives
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in pattern making, tooling, or model shop environments (automotive or aerospace preferred)
- Experience with wood, fiberglass, composites, and laminating resins
- Ability to read blueprints and understand basic GD&T
- Experience with vacuum forming, layups, and fixture building
- Familiarity with CNC machining and/or CAD/CAM software (VISI preferred)
- Strong mill room and toolroom machinery skills
- Ability to work independently and produce high-precision work
- Apprenticeship training or technical degree in manufacturing or mechanical engineering preferred
- Own basic tool set required for daily work
