Tool and Die Pattern Maker - Aerospace/Manufacturing

Shift: 1st
Hours: Monday – Saturday (overtime and weekends required, up to 55 hours/week)

Job Overview

The Pattern Maker constructs master models used to produce prototype and production metal and injection molded parts. This role is responsible for creating high-precision master patterns, core boxes, and tooling used in stamping and injection mold facilities.

Using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and VISI CAD/CAM software, you will oversee projects ranging from rapid prototyping to low-volume manufacturing.

We are looking to add a long-term, dedicated member to the model shop team.

Job Duties

Modeling

  • Interpret complex engineering blueprints
  • Utilize VISI Modelling to create accurate geometries for automotive components and aerospace structural parts

Advanced Tooling & Specialty Builds

  • Composites & Laminating: Develop composite layups and master models for plastic laminating
  • Vac-Forming: Create aluminum or resin tooling for vacuum forming, including vent hole strategy
  • Additive Lab Parts: Integrate 3D-printed components into tooling or use as sacrificial patterns for investment casting
  • Show Display Builds: Construct high-finish display models for trade shows or executive reviews

Mill Room Operations

  • Set up and operate mill room equipment including band saws, table saws, drill presses, and sanders
  • Prepare raw stock and refine final patterns

Prototyping & Low-Volume Production

  • Develop one-off prototype models and bridge tooling for low-volume manufacturing
  • Work with resins, timbers, and other materials

CNC Programming

  • Generate 3-axis and 5-axis toolpaths within the VISI CAM environment
  • Machine patterns from various substrates

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Completion of a Patternmaking Apprenticeship or degree in Mechanical Engineering/Manufacturing
  • Proven experience with traditional woodworking and toolroom machinery
  • Experience working with composites, thermoforming plastics, and laminating resins
  • Ability to work to tolerances of +/- 0.005” or better

Experience

  • 5+ years in a similar role within automotive or aerospace manufacturing
  • Experience with prototype-to-production and display builds
  • Basic blueprint reading
  • Basic GD&T understanding
  • Experience with vacuum forming and lay-ups
  • Must have own toolbox with tools required to perform the job

Pay Range (Based on Experience)

  • Entry to Novice (up to 2 years): $17.00 – $19.00/hr
  • 2 to 5 years: $20.00 – $25.00/hr
  • 5+ years: $26.00 – $30.00/hr
