Position Overview
The Fixture Builder is responsible for constructing, assembling, modifying, and calibrating custom fixtures, jigs, gauges, and tooling used in manufacturing operations. This role requires interpreting engineering drawings and technical documentation to build precision tooling that supports production and quality standards. The ideal candidate has a mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and experience working with shop equipment and precision measuring techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, assemble, and modify fixtures, jigs, gauges, and tooling according to engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications.
- Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and technical documentation to ensure accurate fixture construction.
- Perform precision fitting, alignment, and adjustment of fixture components to required tolerances.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and machining equipment to fabricate, repair, and modify tooling components.
- Conduct testing and verification of completed fixtures to ensure proper function and repeatability.
- Troubleshoot and repair fixture-related issues to support production and minimize downtime.
- Safely set up and operate mill room equipment, including band saws, table saws, drill presses, and sanders.
- Perform basic shop math and technical calculations, including shrinkage, draft angles, and material expansion for composites and plastics.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Technical training, skilled trades education, or experience in fixture building, gage making, manufacturing, or a related field.
- Experience using fixture building tools, shop equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
- Ability to read blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
- Ability to perform basic shop math and technical calculations.
- Mechanical aptitude with attention to detail and quality.
- Ability to work safely around machinery and follow established shop procedures.
- Willingness to learn new materials, manufacturing methods, and fabrication techniques.
Preferred Skills
- Experience building fixtures or gauges in an automotive, aerospace, or manufacturing environment.
- Experience working to close tolerances (±0.005" or better).
- Experience with machining equipment, fabrication, and tooling modification.
- Knowledge of GD&T principles.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to provide and use a personal toolbox with the tools required to perform the job.
