Position Overview
We are seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and dedicated Art Teacher to teach students in grades 5–12. The Art Teacher will provide engaging instruction that encourages creativity, self-expression, artistic development, and critical thinking while helping students build technical and conceptual art skills.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about art and comfortable working with students across multiple grade levels and skill levels. This position offers an opportunity to incorporate technology, hands-on projects, and a variety of artistic mediums into the classroom.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver engaging visual arts lessons for students in grades 5–12.
- Create age-appropriate curriculum and projects that support different skill levels and learning styles.
- Teach a variety of art techniques, mediums, and creative processes.
- Provide instruction in areas such as drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, design, and other visual arts.
- Incorporate technology and digital art tools into instruction when appropriate.
- Teach students proper use and care of art materials, tools, and equipment.
- Encourage creativity, self-expression, experimentation, and artistic problem-solving.
- Establish a positive, inclusive, and well-organized classroom environment.
- Provide demonstrations and individualized guidance to help students develop their artistic abilities.
- Assess student projects and provide constructive feedback on artistic development.
- Maintain student grades, assessments, attendance, and other required documentation.
- Prepare and maintain classroom materials, supplies, equipment, and displays.
- Showcase student artwork through exhibitions, school events, displays, or other appropriate opportunities.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff on school activities and interdisciplinary projects.
- Communicate with parents and families regarding student progress and classroom activities.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, school events, and other school activities.
- Follow school policies, curriculum requirements, and applicable educational regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, or a related field preferred.
- Valid Michigan teaching certification appropriate for Art/Visual Arts education, or willingness to obtain the required certification.
- Previous classroom or student-teaching experience preferred.
- Knowledge of visual arts, artistic techniques, and art education practices.
- Ability to teach students across multiple grade levels and skill levels.
- Ability to develop engaging, age-appropriate art lessons and projects.
- Comfortable incorporating technology and digital tools into art instruction.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and school staff.
- Organized and able to manage classroom materials, supplies, and student projects.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative school team.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive classroom that encourages creativity and self-expression.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching grades 5–12
- Experience teaching Art, Visual Arts, or Fine Arts
- Experience working in a charter school or innovative educational environment
- Experience with digital art, graphic design, photography, or multimedia
- Experience with a variety of artistic mediums and techniques
- Familiarity with STEM/STEAM or interdisciplinary learning
- Experience preparing student art exhibitions or school displays
- Experience differentiating instruction for students with different abilities and learning styles
- Bilingual or multilingual communication skills are a plus
