Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teacher – Visually Impaired to provide specialized instruction and support to students with visual impairments. The teacher will develop and deliver individualized instruction designed to support students' academic development, independence, communication, mobility, and participation in the educational environment.

This is a long-term contract position with the potential to continue year after year, providing an opportunity for stability and continued work within a school environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized instruction to students identified with Visual Impairments (SK) 
  • Develop and implement individualized instructional strategies based on student needs 
  • Follow and implement student IEPs and individualized educational goals 
  • Adapt instructional materials and classroom activities to meet the needs of students with visual impairments 
  • Monitor and document student academic and functional progress 
  • Support students in developing independence, self-advocacy, and functional skills 
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, therapists, administrators, and other support personnel 
  • Assist with the appropriate use of adaptive materials, technology, and instructional resources 
  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student progress and educational needs 
  • Maintain accurate student records and required special education documentation 
  • Participate in IEP meetings and other student support meetings as required 
  • Provide consultation and support to school staff regarding strategies for working with students with visual impairments 
  • Create a safe, accessible, and inclusive learning environment 
  • Follow school policies, procedures, and applicable special education requirements 

Qualifications

  • Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate certification for Visually Impaired (SK) 
  • T2EA certification accepted 
  • Experience working with students with visual impairments preferred 
  • Knowledge of specialized instructional strategies for students with visual impairments 
  • Understanding of IEPs and individualized instruction 
  • Ability to adapt curriculum, instructional materials, and classroom activities 
  • Familiarity with adaptive technology and resources for students with visual impairments preferred 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills 
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, teachers, therapists, and administrators 
  • Patient, flexible, and student-focused approach 
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills 
  • Ability to create a safe, accessible, and supportive learning environment
