Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teacher – Cognitively Impaired to provide specialized instruction and support to students with cognitive impairments. The teacher will develop and deliver individualized instruction designed to support students' academic, developmental, behavioral, social, and functional needs.
This is a long-term contract position with the potential to continue year after year, providing an opportunity for stability and continued work within a school environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide specialized instruction to students identified with Cognitive Impairment (SA)
- Develop and implement individualized instructional strategies based on student needs
- Follow and implement student IEPs and individualized educational goals
- Adapt curriculum, assignments, and instructional materials to support individual learning needs
- Monitor and document student academic, developmental, behavioral, and functional progress
- Support students in developing academic, communication, social, and independent living skills
- Create a structured, safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment
- Implement appropriate instructional and behavioral strategies
- Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, therapists, administrators, and other support personnel
- Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student progress and educational needs
- Maintain accurate student records and required special education documentation
- Participate in IEP meetings and other student support meetings as required
- Provide individualized support based on students' abilities and developmental needs
- Encourage student participation, independence, and growth
- Follow school policies, procedures, and applicable special education requirements
Qualifications
- Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate certification for Cognitively Impaired (SA)
- T2EA certification accepted
- Experience working with students with cognitive impairments preferred
- Knowledge of special education instructional strategies
- Understanding of IEPs and individualized instruction
- Ability to modify curriculum and instructional materials based on student needs
- Ability to support academic, behavioral, social, and functional development
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work effectively with students, families, teachers, therapists, and administrators
- Patient, flexible, and student-focused approach
- Ability to create a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment
