Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Estimator to join our team in Millstone, NJ. This position plays a critical role in project planning and bid execution, with a primary focus on high-voltage electrical installations, commercial construction, and infrastructure projects throughout the New Jersey and New York metropolitan area.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on electrical estimating experience and the ability to analyze complex drawings, specifications, and project requirements to develop accurate and competitive bids. Projects may range in size up to $100 million and include public-sector, transit, infrastructure, commercial, and private-sector work.
The successful candidate must be comfortable working on projects throughout New Jersey and all five boroughs of New York City: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed labor, material, and equipment cost estimates for electrical construction projects from conceptual design through final contract documents.
- Review and interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, specifications, one-line diagrams, and addenda to determine the complete scope of work.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for electrical systems, including:
- Power distribution
- Lighting
- Grounding
- Fire alarm systems
- Low-voltage systems
- Medium- and high-voltage systems
- Complete detailed material takeoffs, including conduit, cabling, wiring, switches, fixtures, and specialized electrical equipment.
- Estimate materials and quantities for large infrastructure projects such as street lighting networks, transit/subway projects, commercial buildings, and automation systems.
- Solicit, analyze, and compare pricing from material suppliers and subcontractors.
- Identify scope gaps, exclusions, cost risks, and potential estimating issues.
- Prepare final bid proposals, cost breakdowns, and supporting documentation in accordance with public-agency and private-sector bidding requirements.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits to evaluate existing conditions and project requirements.
- Review municipal and public-agency specifications and requirements.
- Forecast required man-hours, crew sizes, labor requirements, and project costs, including applicable union labor rates and regulations.
- Manage multiple estimates and projects while meeting strict bid deadlines.
- Work on projects throughout NJ and the 5 boroughs of NYC, with individual projects valued up to $100 million.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of electrical estimating experience, preferably with an established electrical contractor, infrastructure contractor, or similar organization.
- Experience estimating commercial, industrial, infrastructure, public-sector, or high/medium-voltage electrical projects.
- Proficiency with electrical estimating and takeoff software such as:
- Accubid
- Con Est
- Bluebeam
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable regional electrical codes and standards, including NYC requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret complex electrical and engineering drawings, architectural plans, specifications, and one-line diagrams.
- Experience with or familiarity with transit, infrastructure, public-sector, or commercial fit-out projects in the NY/NJ/PA region is highly preferred.
- Strong mathematical and analytical abilities.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to independently prioritize work and meet demanding bid deadlines.
- Understanding of electrical construction labor requirements, crew sizes, productivity, and union labor considerations.
- Ability and willingness to travel to project sites throughout New Jersey and the five boroughs of New York City.
