Tooling Supervisor
Job Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire
Pay: $95,000 - $115,000K (Based on Experience)
Shift: Day shift (6:00am – 4:30pm), plus Saturdays (6:00am – 11:00am)
Position Overview
- The Role: Injection mold tooling supervisor for our build shop. Focus is strictly on production tooling (no sheet metal, no prototype).
- Team Size: 11 employees currently, growing to 13–14, plus 2 on the night shift.
- Candidate Profile: Primarily a people leader. While bench capability is preferred, it is not the main focus. Must have a minimum of 3–5 years of supervisory experience.
- Technical Environment: Tool mix is 60–70% P20 production and 30–40% aluminum. Semi-complex tooling (slides, lifters, hydraulic cylinders, hot runners, sequential valve gating). Scope covers automotive, aerospace, and defense.
- Notes: This role is involved in tryouts and startups (dimensional inspection is handled by Quality)
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the tooling team.
- Assign work, establish priorities, and monitor progress to meet production and tooling schedules.
- Provide hands-on support with tooling repairs, modifications, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Review blueprints, drawings, specifications, and engineering changes.
- Work with Production and Engineering to resolve tooling and manufacturing issues.
- Monitor tooling projects and communicate status, priorities, and potential delays.
- Assist with tooling tryouts, adjustments, repairs, and modifications.
- Coordinate with outside vendors and suppliers when tooling work is outsourced.
- Help maintain tooling records, schedules, and maintenance requirements.
- Support preventive maintenance activities for tooling and related equipment.
- Identify opportunities to improve tooling performance, quality, reliability, and production efficiency.
- Train, coach, and provide technical guidance to tooling employees.
- Promote safe work practices and maintain an organized tooling area.
- Assist with troubleshooting machining and tooling issues as needed.
- Support continuous improvement and process improvement initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in Tooling, Tool & Die, Mold Making, or a related manufacturing environment.
- Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and tooling drawings.
- Hands-on knowledge of tooling repair, modification, maintenance, and assembly.
- Understanding of machining processes such as CNC, milling, grinding, and EDM preferred.
- Experience with injection molds, dies, fixtures, or production tooling preferred.
- Ability to troubleshoot tooling and manufacturing issues.
- Comfortable working directly with Production, Engineering, and Quality.
- Ability to prioritize multiple jobs and keep work moving according to production requirements.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to lead a team while remaining hands-on in the tooling environment.
