Utility Service Designer & Planner

Livonia, MI

JOB SUMMARY:
A Livonia-based engineering firm is seeking an Electric Utility Service Designer/Planner to join their team. This role involves working with various computer systems and software applications to provide accurate utility design services for overhead and underground power distribution systems. The position requires effective communication with internal teams and utility clients to ensure projects meet customer standards and design specifications.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Select and interpret data on map-based platforms like ESRI/Google Earth.
  • Perform field inspections of overhead and underground construction to ensure compliance with customer standards.
  • Advise residential and commercial customers on standards for new or upgraded secondary service requirements.
  • Write construction orders for overhead and underground secondary projects.
  • Negotiate with residential and commercial customers on behalf of clients, if requested.
  • Participate in meetings, provide advice on products/services, and facilitate group discussions and training sessions.
  • Prepare proposals, presentations, and work unit policies/procedures as needed.
  • Understand client needs for overhead distribution systems and develop appropriate design solutions.
  • Conduct research, field visits, and job scoping as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with satisfactory coursework in drafting/CAD, basic electricity, physics, and mathematics, including geometry or trigonometry.
  • Associate’s degree in a technical or design field preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an electrical utility planning role if education requirements are not met.
  • Experience in overhead/underground power distribution design preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil3D; familiarity with ESRI, Arc-GIS, and MicroStation preferred.
  • Experience with all phases of engineering document production and understanding of the relationship between drawings and specifications preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, and project materials.
  • Primarily office-based work, with occasional travel or fieldwork as needed.

  • Hourly compensation ranging from $25.00 to $40.00, depending on experience.
