Electric Utility Designer/Planner

Job Summary:
Seeking a Utility Designer/Planner responsible for utilizing various computer systems and software applications to support internal teams and power utility clients. This role involves designing overhead (OH) and underground (UG) power distribution systems and ensuring accuracy in construction planning.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Select and interpret data using map-based platforms such as ESRI and Google Earth.
  • Conduct field inspections of OH/UG construction to ensure compliance with customer standards.
  • Advise customers and contractors on standards for new or upgraded secondary service requirements.
  • Prepare construction orders for OH/UG secondary jobs.
  • Negotiate with residential and commercial customers as needed.
  • Participate in meetings, provide recommendations, and contribute to project discussions.
  • Develop proposals, presentations, and work unit policies/procedures as required.
  • Facilitate group discussions and employee training sessions.
  • Analyze overhead distribution specifications to develop appropriate design solutions.
  • Conduct research, field visits, and job scoping as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Manager.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with coursework in at least three of the following: drafting/CAD, basic electricity, physics, geometry, trigonometry, or technical mathematics.
  • Associate degree in a technical or design-related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in electrical utility planning if educational requirements are not met.
  • Experience in OH/UG power distribution design preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil3D; familiarity with ESRI, ArcGIS, and MicroStation preferred.
  • Understanding of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, and other design materials.
  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel or fieldwork as needed.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hourly pay ranging from $25.00 to $40.00, based on experience.
