Boiler House and Utilities Shift Manager

GENERAL SUMMARY

Maintain the steam plant in a cost-effective manner by initiating, planning & assisting in direction of day-to-day maintenance activities. Recommend & organize major repair projects as necessary. Initiate requisitions for materials & supplies used in the department. Recommend & make changes to the operations as appropriate. Attempt to resolve all personal complaints in an equitable manner. Train all personnel when changes are made in the operation. Continually improve efficiencies of the boilers to minimize the use of purchased fuels. Assure that boiler stacks comply with environmental requirements on a continuing basis. Directs personnel in the pump repair shop and maintains inventory of spare pumps and pump repair parts. Schedules operating and/or downtime on all equipment including the boilers. Makes decisions relating to fuel utilization independently.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Improve the departments safety performance & housekeeping
  • Reliable operation of Steam & Power to meet the requirements of the coke plant
  • Maintain boilers, compressors & pumps for a reliable & efficient operation
  • Optimum utilization of plant fuels for minimum out of pocket utility cost to the plant.
  • Comply with environmental regulations at minimum cost
  • Train all operating personnel
  • Improve manpower utilization & productivity
  • Authority to assign manpower as indicated per own perception of priorities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

A high school diploma or GED, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in an operating discipline preferred, to provide the following:

  • Heavy industrial experience in an operating discipline
  • Proficient in troubleshooting
  • Working knowledge of boilers, compressors & mechanical equipment
  • Good math background & verbal skills required
  • Must be familiar with writing reports dealing with equipment status
  • Good communication skills
  • Strong safety experience
  • Familiar with maintaining computerized maintenance management systems
  • Team Leading experience that demonstrates effective planning skills and an ability to manage and develop people
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and presence through a track record of accomplishments
  • Demonstrated capability to achieve results through people, technology and processing equipment
  • Good knowledge of the assigned area of responsibility
  • Ability to function within a matrix organization in which functional and business leaders have equal authority within the organization and employees report to both a functional leader and a business leader
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both a functional and business leader, who collaborate on employee issues and decisions (including performance management, compensation and development)
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required
